Episode 6 - Do No Harm

A young girl named Samantha Burch has been missing for two months, so her desperate parents hire the Lightman Group to find her. When Cal and Gillian question the couple, they learn Samantha was adopted five years ago, and -- despite police suspicions -- her parents didn't kill her.

Meanwhile, Eli and Ria attend a party for Northern Uganda peace activist/author Farida Mugisha, who claims she was kidnapped by rebels as a teenager and witnessed massacres prior to her escape. Eli has read her book.

However, her publisher has learned Farida may have taken part in these massacres, which would be a public relations disaster, so the publisher needs to know if Farida is telling the truth. When Eli and Ria interview Farida, she denies any role in massacres and invites them to hear her speak.

All the publicity surrounding Samantha's disappearance -- and the $100,000 reward her parents are now offering -- brings dozens of people to the Lightman offices. When Cal announces the reward's been withdrawn, most of them leave. And when he asks if anyone knows a suspect named Edward Stence, more hands go up. These he also dismisses, explaining it was a false statement and those people were "over-claimers," lying to get attention.

But one of Samantha's schoolmates reveals that Samantha was friends with a boy named Walter. When Cal and Gillian visit his home, Cal plays a hot-or-cold game in Walter's bedroom, where he finds Samantha's backpack, which contains the sweater that Samantha was wearing in her missing-person photo -- plus a wad of cash.

Walter is surprised. He never looked inside, explaining that Samantha gave it to him -- months before she disappeared -- and she trusted him. A classic runaway kit, says Gillian.

But the cash was wrapped in letterhead from Dr. Knowlton, Samantha's psychiatrist. When Cal and Gillian visit Knowlton, she refuses to cooperate, claiming her patient could be endangered. Cal suspects Samantha was abused.

Cal and Gillian re-interview Samantha's parents. Interrupted by a phone call, Cal pretends to verbally abuse his daughter. The parents' horrified reaction tells him they're not abusers. But the mother confesses that Samantha often threw tantrums, one of which led to her falling against a hot stove, which caught her shirt on fire and resulted in severe burns. She breaks into tears. Time to check the hospitals for burn victims.

Listening to Farida's speech about witnessing various atrocities, Ria says she sounds anxious. Eli replies that's normal for public speakers, then asks Farida to sign his book. Eli and Ria tell the publisher there's no evidence that Farida's lying. But she wrote her phone number in Eli's book.

Cal interrogates a registered pedophile who police found working at a free clinic under a false name. He initially lies about not having seen Samantha -- but he's been taking chemical castration drugs, so he's innocent -- then admits she visits the clinic weekly.

Now Eli's giving Farida a post-dinner tour of the Lightman offices, explaining how they read faces to spot lies. Farida says, "Let's go for a ride."

When Samantha arrives at the clinic, the police pick her up. But when reunited with her parents, she claims her name is "Jessica" and has to get home before curfew. Cal and Gillian say she's trying to protect her abductor.

Back at the office, Ria's watching vintage videotapes of Farida, whose voice and body language are different from those at her recent speech. Eli says the speech was memorized and Farida doesn't want to remember the actual events.

Samantha's mother is shattered by the girl's unwillingness to accept her. To prove her empathy, Gillian tells how she and her husband had adopted a baby whose mother took her back after 57 days. (She had 60 to change her mind.) Then she orders her to tell Samantha that she loves her.

Eventually, Samantha cracks. She's sorry, but she's worried about Heather. Who? The other girl that was taken, says Samantha, adding she's still there.

Eli tells Farida he doesn't go on many dates -- too many lies involved -- adding Ria thinks she's a liar. When Farida reacts by touching her ear (a classic giveaway move), Eli realizes Ria's right. Farida explains she's been lying for a greater cause: to draw attention to her country's problems.

After learning that Heather is a foster child who's been missing for three months, Cal plays 20 questions with Samantha. It only takes six to determine that Samantha's abductor was her psychiatrist.

When the police arrive at Knowlton's house, nobody's home. But they find pictures of Knowlton's daughter, Jessica, who died two years ago. Cal explains the abducted children were "replacements." Now where did Jessica die?

They find Knowlton and Heather on a lakeside dock -- with a pistol. Cal and Gillian talk to Knowlton, who's completely delusional, adding that everyday she sees parents screwing up kids and she could do better job. Eventually, she breaks down, drops the gun, and gets handcuffed.

Eli tells Ria that Farida's book is being withdrawn. Learning that Farida visited the office, Ria says she either wanted to get caught -- or she liked you. Eli says he doesn't care. Ria calls him a liar. Eli admits that.

Meanwhile, Gillian looks shaken. She's remembering her failed adoption, explaining that her husband can't talk about it, so they don't. She fights back tears. Cal gives her a reassuring touch. They stare out into the night.
