Episode 10 - Better Half

A house is blazing. A man, Frank Ambrose, screams that his mother-in-law and daughter are still inside. As a firefighter pulls the girl to safety, the house explodes.

Meanwhile, Cal finds his ex-wife, Assistant U.S. Attorney Zoe Landau, sitting at his desk, playfully covering her face with one of Cal's tribal masks. She asks for Cal's help on this house-fire case.

The Ambroses gather around hospitalized daughter, Maggie. Frank denies setting the fire, blaming TV reporter Jack Garcia -- witnessed running out of the cellar -- for the blaze. But the witness is Frank's son, A.J.

After listening to A.J. recount this story, Cal asks if he knows the tale about the boy who cried wolf. He does. Cal wants Gillian to evaluate A.J.

Cal interrogates Jack, who denies having any problem with Frank Ambrose, but his face shows contempt. Jack explains they were once friends, then lost touch until six months ago, when Frank asked him for money, which he gave him. But when he recently asked for it back, Frank got angry.

Zoe discovers Frank is deeply in debt and his house was insured for more than it's worth, but he still denies being an arsonist.

Gillian thinks A.J. believes his story. She also thinks Zoe's lying about how good her relationship is with her boyfriend, Roger. And she wants Ria's help with the Dante Edwards murder case: Days after a public argument with a gangster-rapper named Caden, Dante -- a member of rival rapper Little Sid's entourage -- was shot while exiting a night club.

Gillian, Ria, and a detective arrive at Caden's mini-mansion, where Caden denies killing Dante -- Ria detects regret when Dante's name is mentioned. Caden explains that he, Dante, and his cousin B all grew up together. Besides, he and B -- who's sitting right there -- were here watching a basketball game when Dante got shot.

Next time Gillian talks to A.J., Cal's also there, talking to an imaginary friend. A.J. thinks Cal's weird, but he also thinks Santa Claus is real. Cal says A.J.'s drawings of what happened that night are a window into his unconsciousness, so keep him drawing.

Alone in the hospital, Maggie tells Eli she's angry with her mother, Cheryl. Watching a videotape of the family, Cal notices Cheryl holds her breath whenever Jack's mentioned. Cheryl tells Cal she recently had an affair with Jack, but broke it off because family is all Frank has left. She also thinks Jack's innocent.

Afterward, Cal and Zoe discuss their failed marriage. Both were faithful; she wanted to kill, not hurt him. Then they confront Jack's wife, Sarah, who says he told her about the affair weeks ago, but marriage is about making it through change. Cal detects anger. Zoe says she's lying to herself. This turns into a screaming argument. When Zoe plays the too-much-honesty, no-surprise card, Cal's close to tears.

Eli discovers that the anger on the videotape of Caden and Little Sid at an album release party last year is all posturing. Eli also conducts an experiment with Ria, who places Dante's face with those of a group of gay -- instead of straight -- men. Noting Little Sid's homophobic lyrics, they suspect he killed Dante.

Gillian finds A.J.'s latest drawings of what happened that night have become more fanciful. If they were accurate, he'd stick to what he actually remembers. She suspects someone he trusts told him a story, like about Santa Claus, and he believes it.

Cal and Zoe interrogate Frank and Cheryl, who deny implanting the story. Zoe thinks Frank's lying. Cal doesn't. Zoe says Cal thinks he's God. Cal says Zoe doesn't care what he thinks. Cal asks about Roger. Zoe says they're fine. Cal doesn't believe her, but his daughter, Emily, confirms that Roger proposed to Zoe.

Ria and the detective question Little Sid, who denies being a homophobe, but was angry about Dante going to work for Caden -- even when Sid offered more money.

Emily tells Cal that he and Zoe are delusional, adding Zoe doesn't wear her engagement ring because she still thinks she's in love with Cal, who admits Emily sees them clearly.

Cal and Zoe question Maggie, who knew about her mother and Jack and -- afraid he would break up their family -- admits feeding A.J. the story. But Maggie didn't start the fire. And there's just been another house fire.

Ria and Riley interrogate Caden, who knew Dante was gay -- and loved him. B's face shows contempt and disgust, but not surprise. B admits leaving Caden's house that night and shooting Dante because he believed Caden's being outed would kill his career. He's handcuffed.

Cal questions the new fire victims, Aaron and Laurel Craig. He's secretly happy -- the fire insurance will enable them to go their separate ways. But when Cal asks Laurel if Frank Garcia -- seen reporting from the scene -- is her favorite TV newsman, she can't conceal her guilt. Then Cal questions Frank, who admits having an affair with Laurel.

Knowing female arsonists are motivated by revenge, Cal confronts Sarah, who confesses to setting both fires to get even with Frank's lovers. She's handcuffed.

Cal tells Zoe he's OK with Roger, and that she should make it work for Emily's sake and should wear Roger's ring. Next thing we see is Zoe getting dressed, looking anxious -- Emily's home early -- and Cal, lying shirtless in bed, says, "Oops."
